A transplant is a medical treatment that lies in moving organs from a patient to another one, and thus the transplanted organ replaces and assumes the functions that were performed by the recipient’s original organ. These treatments These treatments often carry a risk of organ rejection, which depends on the type of transplant.

There are several types of transplants:

  • Autograft: The donor and the recipient are the same person. There’s no rejection.
  • Isograft: The donor and the recipient are two genetically identical members of the same species. There’s a little risk of rejection.
  • Allograft: The donor and the recipient are two genetically non-identical members of the same species. In most of cases the patient has to take drugs to avoid rejection during the graft’s life.
  • Xenograft: The donor and the recipient and not member of the same species. The patient will have also has to take drugs to avoid rejection during the graft’s life.
